The human nose: an essential tool to control olfactive nuisances
The NOSE Service provides a global and constantly enriched approach of odour management to avoid any odour nuisance in the neighbourhoods of wastewater collection and treatment, sludge valorisation and waste management facilities.
Two approaches to be conducted in parallel are necessary : the resident approach and the technical approach.
- The technical approach aims at determining the measured olfactory footprint of the plant. The odour flux generated by the installation is measured when it concerns an existing installation and anticipated when it concerns construction. The ventilation flow rate, if necessary, is estimated according to the security constraints that have to be respected. The odour flux generated by the installation and the choice of the way of treating odours are then defined. Finally a dispersion model allows to assess the odour dispersion in the environment : from the installation to the residents.
The Odour Wheel
- The resident approach aims at determining the real olfactory footprint of the installation (whether the site exists or is a project) thanks to the resident sensibility according to legislation (local, regional or national). It defines the actions that have to be set up.
